  • Panel Q&A

This is a 1.5-hour workshop that runs the day before the main ISMOS-8 symposium and is hosted by professionals from academia, industry and governmental institutions. Invited panellists will explore their professional experiences in academia and how their careers have evolved over the years.

Workshop 2: Failure Analysis of Microbiologically Influenced Corrosion – How do we get the procedures right?

Moderators: Torben Lund Skovhus and Richard Eckert

Guest speakers:

  • Amanda Harmon, Project Manager, Energy Delivery & Utilization, GTI

  • Susmitha Purnima Kotu, Corrosion Engineer, DNV Columbus Materials and Corrosion Research Center, Energy Systems

  • Natalie Rachel, Postdoctoral fellow, Petroleum Microbiology Research Group, University of Calgary

Duration: 1.5 hr

Please join us for an exciting and interactive digital workshop where our selected panellists will share their professional experiences on failure analysis studies.

Topics to be covered are:

  • Current state of MIC failure analysis in the oil and gas industry
  • Selection and preservation of samples for metallurgical and microbiological analysis
  • Analytical methods that can be used to collect data for determining the mechanistic cause of corrosion
  • Integrating multiple lines of evidence regarding chemical, physical and microbiological conditions to reach a well-supported conclusion

Event Agenda

  • Welcome and introduction
  • Failure Analysis presentations (7-10 min each)
  • Break
  • Panel Q&A

This is a 1.5-hour workshop that runs the day before the main ISMOS-8 symposium and is hosted by professionals from academia, industry and governmental institutions. Invited panellists will explore their professional experiences with the audience in an interactive way.

Workshop 3: Hands-on Experience with NanoPore Sequencing – bringing the lab to the oilfields

Moderators: Renato De Paula & Sean Caffrey,

Guest speakers: David Werner, University of New Castle & Richard K Tennant, University of Exeter

Duration: 1.5 hr

The advancement of molecular techniques has revolutionized the understanding of microbial populations in oilfields. New technologies and cost reduction have made DNA Sequencing a common analytical test for field samples. Nanopore sequencing is an exciting technology that allows fast identification of microbial communities.

Event Agenda

  • Welcome and introduction
  • Speaker 1: David Werner, University of New Castle
  • ‪Speaker 2: Richard K Tennant, University of Exeter
  • Q&A Session

This 1.5-hour workshop will be hosted by academia and industry professionals who have experience with the Nanopore Sequencing technology. Invited speakers will share their experiences with the technology and discuss pros and cons of the application of these techniques in laboratory and field environments.
